Mangroves Saving Our Shores

Have you ever heard of the walking trees?  No, I’m not talking about science fiction but real science about a tree that grows along both coasts of Florida.  It’s called a Mangrove, and its varieties are in the hundreds worldwide, primarily growing in equatorial climates. Here in Florida, there are three prominent varieties including red, black and white. 

The red mangrove is the most prolific and the only variety of the three that puts out reaching branches called prop roots that appear to be walking forward.  This feature helps the red mangrove to capture tropical sediments, stabilize sea grasses and coral reefs and create a buffer for protection of our shorelines against severe weather. 

The salt tolerant mangrove forests in Florida provide an environment for fish and game to flourish by hiding among the many branches.  In order to protect this valuable resource, there are specific state and local regulations regarding trimming or cutting.  Call before you cut!
